Lalvuani, elder sister of Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga, died of Covid-19 at Zoram Medical College (ZMC) near Aizawl on Monday. She was 88.

Her demise was announced by Zoramthanga through social media platforms.

“It is with deep sorrow that I announce the demise of my beloved elder sister Lalvuani (88-years) this morning at 11:30 am,” the chief minister tweeted.

Lalvuani, the third eldest of seven siblings, had been in a sickbed due to Asthma and old-age-related complications for several months, family sources.

She had been diagnosed with Covid-19 on September 22 and was shifted to ZMC, lone dedicated Covid-19 hospital in the state, the sources said.

She succumbed to the infection on Monday at around 11:30 am, it said.

Mizoram on reported 527 new Covid-19 cases, pushing the state tally to 88,693, a government bulletin said.

The death toll rose to 295 as three more people succumbed to the infection, it said.

The single-day infection rate was 31.77 per cent as the fresh cases were detected from 1, 659 sample tests, it said.

The fresh cases were reported from various districts with Aizawl district reporting the highest at 550, followed by Lawngtlai at 20 and Champhai at 16.

At least 131 children were among the newly infected people, the bulletin said.

At least 355 patients have developed symptoms of Covid-19, it said.

Mizoram now has 15,485 active cases, while 72,913 people have recovered from the infection.

The recovery rate among Covid-19 patients is 82.20 per cent and the death rate is 0.33 per cent.

The state has conducted more than 10.71 lakh sample tests for Covid-19 till date.

According to state immunization officer Dr. Lalzawmi, over 6.76 lakh people have been vaccinated till Monday, of which 4.15 lakh people have received full doses.
