In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, Assam Rifles personnel jointly with the Customs department seized a consignment of smuggled cigarettes in the Champhai district of Mizoram on Monday.

The Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles in collaboration with the Customs department seized 17 cartons of foreign origin cigarettes on Monday.

They also apprehended one person in connection with the seizure, an Assam Rifles official said.

It is estimated that foreign origin cigarettes will cost Rs 22.10 lakh in the local market.

The consignment of the contraband was smuggled from Myanmar, the official claimed.

Meanwhile, Assam Rifles distributed dry rations along with other essential commodities and Christmas cake to two orphanages on Tuesday.

The orphanages are Utility Orphanage Home and Zoar Urban Deprived Children’s Home in Serchhip.

Both the orphanage homes have 18 children, who have lost their parents and guardians at a very young age.
