Guwahati: The vote tally for the 19-seat Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) began early on Monday morning and has continued so far without any incidents or disruptions reported.

Initial figures emerging from the counting centres indicate that the Zoram Peopleโ€™s Movement (ZPM), which is currently in power, is ahead in five different wards.

Mizoram State Election Commissioner H. Lalthlangliana said the counting process began at 8 am at the Aizawl Deputy Commissionerโ€™s office. He noted that early rounds showed ZPM candidates leading in five wards, while counting in the remaining areas was still underway when the latest update was shared.

The civic polls, held on April 21, recorded voter participation of 62.77 percent, with about 2.39 lakh people casting their ballots.

Altogether, 68 candidates entered the election race, including 28 women contestants.

Three major parties, the Zoram Peopleโ€™s Movement, Mizo National Front, and Congress, each put up 19 candidates, while the Bharatiya Janata Party fielded 11 nominees.

The results will decide which party will run the municipal administration, which was previously controlled by the Mizo National Front after it secured victory in the 2021 civic election.

Election officials have said that the vote counting process is being closely supervised with heavy security deployment and strict adherence to established rules.

They added that all steps are being followed carefully to maintain fairness, transparency, and an orderly procedure throughout the counting exercise.

Vote counting is still in progress, and additional updates are expected as more results come in.
