The Divisional Bench of the Gauhati High Court on Wednesday dismissed the PIL by Chakma Students Association on reservation of technical seats after repeated absence of association’s lawyers.
Sources said that the Registrar of the Divisional Bench, Gauhati High Court was ordered to inform the lawyers of the student body by telephone conversation to appear before court after they failed to show up for court several times. After repeated appeals made by the Divisional Bench, Justice MR Pathak and Justice Michael Zothankhuma dismissed the case – WPC (PIL) No.16 of 2017/ 49 of 2016 – Mizoram Chakma Student Union Versus State of Mizoram.
T?he Mizoram Chakma Students’ Union had approached the Gauhati High Court last year after the Mizoram government amended the state’s technical entrance examination rules which barred non-ethnic Zo students in category 1.
Owing to the Chakma students’ body PIL, the Gauhati High Court stayed the Mizoram government’s new technical education rules that placed “Zo people who are native inhabitants” in category 1 in the state’s selection criteria for college admissions.
