The directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) arrested the son of a former MLA of Mizoram and recovered a consignment of gold weighing over six kg estimated to be over Rs 2 crores. Lalhmangaiha (24), the accused, is a resident of Tuirial at Aizawl.
He is a college drop-out who stays at a rented flat in north Kolkata. His father was an MLA earlier, according to the DRI, Asian Age reported.
Acting on a specific tip off a team of officers of the DRI Kolkata zonal unit caught the accused at Burrabazar in central Kolkata on Saturday. 40 pieces of gold biscuits of foreign origin were found in his backpack during a search.
The consignment weighs around 6.64 kgs which is valued at around Rs 2.16 crores, the central agency said in a statement.
Lalhmangaiha has been booked under the Customs Act.
The DRI informed that the consignment was smuggled into India from Myanmar through Northeast.
“Preliminary investigation by the DRI sleuths reveals that this was not the first time that he has indulged in such illegal smuggling activities. He confessed that the lure of easy money and lack of employment opportunities made him commit this crime…”
