Mizoram Congress president and former chief minister Lal Thanhawla wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention into the economic blockade launched by locals of Lailapur village in Assam’s Cachar district.
The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president dashed off the letter to PM Modi on Wednesday.

The MPCC president in his letter on Wednesday said some miscreants in Assam’s Cachar district resorted to blocking the only road (NH-306) connecting Mizoram with the rest of the country for over 10 days owing to certain disagreement over the border issue between Mizoram and Assam.
“As a result of this prolonged blockade of Mizoram’s only economic lifeline, Mizoram economy is now at standstill and the poor people, as often predicted in such circumstances, are the worst hit with nobody in Mizoram is spared of this blockade in all matters connected with daily life, now unfortunately coupled with COVID-19 pandemic,” the letter said.
Asking the Prime Minister to intervene into the matter to ensure that normally is restored at the earliest, Lal Thanhawla said the Centre is expected to instruct the Assam government to ensure uninterrupted and smooth transit between the two states as warranted in the constitution.

The Congress leader also warned that unwanted things, which he supposedly meant 1966 rebellion like situation, may resurface if the younger generation of Mizoram feels alienated in any way from the motherland India.
After a brief lull, residents of Lailapur launched a blockade on National Highway-306, which is the lifeline of Mizoram, since October 28 crippling supply of essential commodities.
The meeting between the chief secretaries of Mizoram and Assam, chaired by Union home secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Sunday, yielded little results as only 63 vehicles have entered from Assam since Monday, police said.
