In a keenly contested match at the Assam Rifles ground in Aizawl on Saturday, Chhinga Veng football club defeated the I-League champion Aizawl FC to lift the most prestigious Mizoram Premier League trophy.

Chhinga Veng FC striker R Malsawmtluanga scored the winning goal in the fifth minute of the match. Laldampuia’s cross to Malsawmtluanga who headed the ball to the net made the difference.

Chhinga Veng FC became the maiden team to win all of Mizoram Football Associations’ top tournaments of the season making them the treble champion. They now hold MFA Super Cup, Independence Day Cup and Mizoram Premier League title, the first club to achieve the feat.

Chhinga Veng FC coach Lalsangzuala Hmar also became the first coach to lift the MPL trophy twice.

The I-League champion Aizawl FC put in every effort to turn the match around but the solid Chhinga Veng defence  resisted all the moves.

“We did everything we could, luck was just not on our side,” said AFC’s Portuguese coach Paulo Meneses.

“To win the most coveted Mizoram sports trophy in our second season is a big achievement for us, hats off to the players and also the fans, our 12th men” Lalhriatpuia, co-owner of Chhinga Veng FC said.

Chhinga Veng FC will now play in the I- League second division.
