Lalhriatrenga Chhangte, a former BJP member, is all set to contest Serchhip by-election in central Mizoram on the saffron party ticket.
According to BJP insiders, Mizoram state committee of the party has nominated Chhangte as its candidate for the upcoming by-election.
Party national general secretary (organization) B L Santhosh has in principle approved his name as a candidate for the by-polls.
However, an official announcement from the BJP is yet to be made.
Chhangte also confirmed that he would be contesting the by-poll on the BJP ticket.
He said he enrolled as a BJP primary member at the BJP office here today, for the second time.
The former deputy controller of mines under the central government had joined the BJP for a brief period of ten months in 2019 to become the state BJP’s first chairman of “missionary cell.”
A year later, he left the party citing that he had no hopes in the state BJP leaders.
Chhangte, a voter from Serchhip, had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate but lost to Mizo National Front (MNF)’s candidate Lalrosanga.
Chhangte secured 12,675 votes in the Lok Sabha elections.
By-election to Serchhip seat has been necessitated by the disqualification of its MLA Lalduhoma on grounds of “defection to another party.”
