Bill to supply cadavers to Mizoram medical institute passed in Assembly

The Mizoram Anatomy Bill 2019, which proposed supply of unclaimed bodies to teaching medical institutions was unanimously passed on Thursday after it was introduced by the Mizoram health minister.

The bill was taken into consideration in the House and passed with support from the ruling as well as opposition party members.

The Mizoram Anatomy Bill, which proposes to supply unclaimed bodies of deceased persons or donated bodies to teaching medical institutions, was introduced due to a demand for the purpose of anatomical examination and dissection.

The cadavers will be supplied particularly to Mizoram Institute of Medical Education and Research (MIMER) at Falkawn where classes were started from August 2018.

Mizoram Institute of Medical Education & Research is the first medical college established in the State of Mizoram.

On August 7, 2018 the medical college and hospital was inaugurated by then Mizoram chief minister Lalthanhawla at Falkawn, about 16 km from Aizawl, the State capital of Mizoram.

As per the Medical Council of India Regulation, 1999, the maximum requirement of the medical teaching college with annual intake capacity of 100 students is ten annually.

But MIMER, which also has an annual intake of 100 students, has decided to make an adjustment,
saying, the institution will be able to manage with 8 cadavers which will cost 8 lakhs per year.

According to media reports, cadavers are required by medical colleges for the purpose of anatomical examination and dissection.

An MIMER official on condition of anonymity said it could manage with 8 cadavers per year.
