In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, the Assam Rifles troops deployed in Mizoram recovered a huge consignment of poppy seeds worth Rs 18.83 lakh in the Champhai district.
The operation was carried out by the Serchhip Battalion of HQ 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ Inspector General Assam Rifles (East).
During the operation, the Assam Rifles team recovered 140 bags of poppy seeds.

The HQ IGAR (East) in a statement said the approximate value of the recovered poppy seeds would be Rs 18,83,000.
The poppy seeds were recovered from a truck on the Tlangsam-Tyao Road in Champhai district on October 12, 2021.

“The operation was carried out by a joint team of 8 Assam Rifles, 20 FIT and Customs Department, Champhai based on specific information,” the statement said.
The Customs department of Champhai seized the contraband items on October 12, 2021 for further legal proceedings, the statement said.
“Ongoing smuggling of Poppy seeds is a major cause of concern for the state of Mizoram, especially along the India-Myanmar Border. Assam Rifles, rightly christened as the ‘Sentinels of Northeast’ have continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram,” it added.
