In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, the Assam Rifles troops deployed in Mizoram recovered foreign-origin cigarettes worth Rs 67.60 lakh at Hnahlan in Champhai district.

The smuggled foreign-origin cigarettes were recovered by the Aizawl Battalion of HQ 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) on Tuesday.

During the operation, the Assam Rifles troops belonging to the Aizawl Battalion recovered 52 cases of foreign-origin cigarettes, the HQ IGAR (East) said in a statement.

“The operation was carried out by 2 Assam Rifles based on specific information,” the statement said.

The approximate cost of the recovered foreign-origin cigarette is Rs 67,60,000, HQ IGAR (East) informed.

The Customs department in Champhai seized the contraband items on Tuesday for further legal proceedings, it said.

“Ongoing smuggling of Foreign origin cigarettes is a major cause of concern for the state of Mizoram, especially along the India-Myanmar Border,” the Assam Rifles stated.

“Assam Rifles, rightly christened as the ‘Sentinels of Northeast’ have continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram,” it added.
