Assam-Mizoram border row: Mizo groups set up bunkers along inter-state border

Amid Assam-Mizoram border tension, in a fresh development a group of people from the neighboring state has reportedly set up several bunkers along the Lowirpoua-Kanmun national highway in Karimganj district.

They have also allegedly taken over possession of about three kilometres of the Medlichhara Forest Reserve area under Patharkandi Assembly constituency in the district, said an official.

Mizoram government has deployed a huge number of security personnel in the inter-state border areas.

Sources said that members of the Young Mizo Association and local Mizo residents are allegedly often gather at the disputed sites and shout slogans against Assam government.

Karimganj DFO Jalnur Rahman has lodged an FIR at the Ratabari Police Station against a group of Mizo youths on the instructions of the Assam government.

DFO Rahman said that the case has been filed as per the decision taken at the administrative-level meeting held at Karimganj in the presence of Assam ADGP (Law and Order) GP Singh.

According to reports, the copies of the peace agreement that was signed at the joint meeting held between the Karimganj district administration and the Mamit district administration on October 31 at the Ichabil tea garden were burnt by the YMA members in Aizawl.

The YMA activists also staged a protest in front of the Mizoram Chief Minister’s bungalow against the deal.
