World’s leading sports magazine – the Sports Illustrated has awarded the prestigious Editor’s Award for Excellence to Aizawl FC at a gala award function held on Wednesday at Aerocity’s The Ballroom, Roseate House in New Delhi.

The sports award gala was graced by Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore. Aizawl FC’s owner and president Robert Romawia Royte and his wife Aizawl FC co-owner Lalrampari Royte received the award on Aizawl FC’s behalf.

The sports award night saw the presence of hockey player Balbir Singh, badminton star Srikanth Kidambi, Leander Paes, Olympian Jitu Rai, Olympic silver medalist Sushil Kumar (wrestler) and several big shots of the sporting fraternity of India.

At the award acceptance speech Robert Romawia Royte said football has achieved many new feat, it has become a bridge that joins mainland India and the Northeast India.

In the presence of the union sports minister Robert Romawia Royte pleaded the minister and other stakeholders of the industry to invest more in northeast to tap the talents.

“It was sad that the club had to play Asian Cup home match in other city due to the unavailability of FIFA standard football ground in Aizawl. To host and witness the Asian Cup in Aizawl was the dream of thousands and thousands of Mizo football fans; I dearly and kindly request all the stakeholders of sports industry to take stock of the situation in Aizawl and other northeastern cities,” Robert Romawia Raoyte said.

In their second season of India’s elite I-League Aizawl FC won a fairy tale championship defying all odds in 2016-2017.
