671 pigs in Mizoram have been killed by the deadly African swine fever.
As many as 431 pig deaths due to African swine fever has been reported from Lungsen village in south Mizoram’s Lunglei district along the India-Bangladesh border.

Samples sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Disease (NIHSAD) in Bhopal have been tested positive for African swine fever.
The Mizoram Government so far has declared Lungsen village and Electric Veng in Lunglei District, Zawlnuam in Mamit District, Edenthar and Armed Veng within Aizawl city as infected areas.

Eight pig deaths have been reported from Electric Veng in Lunglei district.
116 pig deaths have been reported in Edenthar and Armed Veng localities within Aizawl city.
Moreover, 117 pigs also died in Mamit district due to African swine fever.
Although, the samples sent to NIHSAD in Bhopal returned positive, the serotype through genome sequencing is still awaited.
An emergency meeting in this regard was convened by Mizoram Minister for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary – Dr K Beichhua on Tuesday in Aizawl.
The death of pigs have caused loss tuning lakhs of rupees.

The Mizoram Government has already sounded alert for African swine fever in the State.
The first pig death was reported earlier this months near hotels in Lungsen where imported pig meats were largely consumed.
