A study report on the Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition and Control) Act, 2014 has revealed that 19% death in Mizoram hospitals are caused by alcohol related diseases.

Study group member Dr Laldinliana Varte in his report stated 23.38 per cent of deaths recorded in four larger hospitals of Aizawl were alcohol related.
“Though 23.38 per cent was recorded as alcohol related diseases, however from the death certificates issued by these hospitals 19 per cent were registered alcohol related,” the report read.
The MLPC Act study group has scaled every minute detail on the health, social, religious impact of regulated liquor sale under the Act which was passed by the Congress government in 2014 ending more than 30 years of total prohibition in Mizoram.

The report along with recommendations which is being submitted to the state government has stated that out of every Re 1 revenue the state government, the vendors and the warehouse owners earned, an estimated Rs 2.85 were spent in the aftermath.
The report stated that there were 23,408 casualty or emergency cases related to alcohol in Aizawl Civil Hospital which incurred a monetary value of Rs 24,069,978, an amount which the report said was calculated at par with the per capita income of Mizoram.
