Mizoram Tourism Minister John Rotluangliana on Tuesday laid the foundation stone of Asia’s longest ropeway in Aizawl.
The proposed ropeway will be also the first of its kind in the state.
Rotluangliana said the ropeway would operate between Durtlang and Tourist Lodge at Chaltlang in Aizawl, which will be Asia’s longest.
It will be the longest single unsupported “span” ropeway in Asia. He said the proposed ropeway service would boost tourism. The project has been sanctioned by the Centre.
The Centre has sanctioned Rs 99 crore for the project and the State Government has already received the first and second installments.
The ropeway will be 2.23km long and designed to ferry 24 passengers on a single trip in eight minutes. Delhi-based Leading Edge Pvt Ltd has been hired to execute the construction of the ropeway.
The Government also plans to construct a skywalk in the land donated by Siphhir and Lungdai village councils at Sakawrhmuituai along Siphhir to Lungdai road which will be the first of its kind in India.
