Aizawl: Five individuals, including two juveniles, have been arrested in connection with the brutal assault of a teenager in Mizoramโ€™s capital, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday near the Grand Hotel in Aizawlโ€™s Chanmari locality, where a group of five youths allegedly attacked a 19-year-old following a confrontation. According to police, the victim was on his way home when the assault occurred.

Officials said three of the accused have been sent to judicial custody, while the two minors were handed over to the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB).

The injured youth is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital and is reported to be out of danger.

Amid growing concerns over law and order, the Central Committee of the Young Mizo Association (CYMA) expressed serious concern over the increasing incidents of late-night gang clashes and street violence involving youths across Aizawl.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the stateโ€™s largest civil society organisation said the capital city has become increasingly unsafe during nighttime hours. It appealed to families and local YMA branches to actively cooperate in maintaining peace and preventing violence and public disorder in their respective localities.

The CYMA also urged the state government and law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts and deploy adequate resources to tackle the rising incidents of lawlessness and ensure public safety in Aizawl.

Additionally, the organisation appealed to residents and eyewitnesses to promptly report any cases of street violence or disturbances to the police emergency helpline (112) or local community leaders to facilitate immediate action.
