Assam Rifles recover illegal areca nuts worth Rs. 13.44 lakh

Aizawl: In yet another success in its series of operations against the illegal smuggling of areca nuts, Assam Rifles along with Customs dept Champhai recovered 24 bags of smuggled areca nuts worth Rs 13.44 lakh from the general area of Tlangsam in Champhai district and apprehended one individual on June 8, Assam Rifles said in a statement.

During the Operation, a miscreant from Tlangsam village attempted to disrupt the operation by Assam Rifles personnel.

In the past also on many occasions, a few individuals with ulterior motives tried to disrupt the ongoing operations, even dismantling posts, pelting stones, protesting, and trying to implicate the troops doing their bonafide duties, risking their lives, protecting Mizoram and Indian border and preventing illegal activities, the statement said.

However, the ethos of Assam Rifles stood the test of all challenges and came out clean in all incidents.

During all these testing times troops on the ground displayed exemplary restraint thereby upholding the highest standards of professionalism while working with close cooperation with central and state agencies, police,  local leaders and civil society organisations, it said.

The recovered contraband was handed over to the Customs Department in Champhai on June 8 for further legal proceedings
