The 39th World Food Day was observed with great pomp and show in Aizawl on Wednesday.
Hosting a programme at Agriculture department’s conference hall in the state capital, its director, RohmingthangaColney, said, “Mizoram is working up its way in becoming self-sufficient as far as rice production is concerned.”

He informed, “New terrace and paddy field areas are being prepared in different parts of the state and efforts are being made to increase the production of rice under National Food Security Mission (NFSM) in Mizoram.”
Colney,added,“Large areas are still available for agricultural work and the Agriculture Department is ready to provide machinery to the farmers for lending them support in increasing the production of rice.”
World Food Day (WFD) was established by the member countries of FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) in November 1979, at the organization’s 20th General Conference.

“Our actions are our future, healthy diets for a #zerohunger world,” is the theme of World Food Day for the year 2019, which also focuses on tackling global hunger.
“Due to globalization, urbanization and income growth, diets and eating habits are changing fast. Instead of seasonal, fibre rich food and plant based food, we have shifted to refined, starches, sugar, fats, salt, processed food, meat, etc,” informed, Colney.
Director of Agriculture concluded by saying, “Due to unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles obesity in people is increasing in developed and low-income countries, which is a grave warning for all of us.”
