Mizo weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga earned the berth to compete at the third Youth Olympic Games to be held at Buenos Aires, Argentina from October 6-13 becoming the first weightlifter from Mizoram to compete the youth Olympic.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga broke four Indian records in the 62 kg category to earn a berth in the Indian team.

Selection trials were held in Sports Authority of India, Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports, Patiala to choose one lifter each from boys and girls categories across all weight divisions after India had earned two quota places for the Buenos Aires Youth Olympic.

“Jeremy Lalrinnunga lifted a total weight of 273 kg in 62 kg category and created two new youth and junior national records in snatch event with a lift of 126 kg, he also equalled the snatch record in senior section, creating two new youth and junior records in total with a lift of 273 kg,” Sahdev Yadav, Secretary General of the Indian Weightlifting Federation said.

In the youth snatch and junior snatch categories the Mizo youngster broke four previous national junior records set by Deepak Lather of Haryana in 2015 and equalled the senior national records held by M Raja of Tamil Nadu.

In April this year, this 15-year old weightlifter broke two national records to win the silver and the bronze medal at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship in Uzbekistan. He registered his best total of 250 kg to win the silver in youth section and a bronze medal in the junior section. He also created national records in youth boys and junior men during his lift of 250 kg.
