In a major setback for Congress, the Meghalaya Governor has invited the National People’s Party (NPP) to form the government in the state.

Raj Bhawan sources this evening said the oath taking ceremony will take place at 10.30 am on March 6.

Conrad K Sangma met Governor Ganga Prasad earlier today to stake claim to form government in the hill state.

Sources said several top BJP leaders including NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma is likely to attend the oath taking ceremony.

Despite being emerged as the single largest party with 21 seats, Congress failed to form government as the regional UDP and HSPDP refused to extend support to the grand old party.

In polls, the NPP won 19 seats and BJP and UDP bagged two and six seats respectively.

The alliance has the support of 29 MLAs — 19 of the NPP, six of the UDP, two of the HSPDP and BJP’s two, he said. But Conrad K Sangma has claimed that he has support of 34 MLAs.
