Waste management: Meghalaya to study Alappuzha’s tactics

Meghalaya will study the waste management programme being implemented in Alappuzha city of Kerala and a study team to be led by urban affairs minister, Hamletson Dohling will leave for the southern State next week.

The Centre for Science and Environment had rated Alappuzha in 2016 as the top cleanest town in India followed by Mysuru and Panaji.

Alappuzha is a city and a municipality in Kerala with an urban population of 174,164. The city is the third among districts in Kerala having highest literacy rate.

During the visit, the study team will interact with the people who involved in the implementation of the waste management programme and see if such techniques being adopted there can be also implemented here.

Dohling said that Shillong should be a clean city especially with the state hosting the National Games in 2022.

The minister expressed serious concern over indiscriminate throwing of garbage in Shillong and other places.
