Visually challenged Meghalaya footballer feted

When visual impairment cannot be a barrier, one reaches the pinnacles of success. Klingson Marak, hailing from a sleepy hamlet in South West Khasi Hills of Meghalaya is not only making his village proud, but also inspiring many differently abled youth across the country.

Marak, has earned the coveted selection to play for the country in the football world cup for blind in June next year. Presently he is undergoing intensive training in Kerala.

It was a big day for Marak’s family when the state Department of Sports and Youth Affairs handed over a cheque of Rs 1 lakh to his father on the occasion of International Day of Disabled Persons in Ampati to facilitate in his preparation.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Resource Mobilisation and Employment Generation Council, Dikkanchi D Shira, who is also the legislator from Mahendraganj said the day marks the contribution of the differently-abled to society and upholds their rights.

She also emphasized the need for more NGOs in the district dedicated to the service and welfare of the differently abled and cited an example of how Sir Stephen Hawking, the famous physicist despite his limitations, continued his research into theoretical physics.

South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Cyril Darlong Diengdoh while addressing the gathering said it is the solemn responsibility of the district administration to offer equal opportunities to the differently-abled.

“A lot more has to be done to provide greater opportunities to our friends with disabilities and a comprehensive district level policy on disability should be drafted,” assured Diengdoh.

As part of the celebration, various sports for the differently-abled were held at Ampati students’ field in the morning, followed by a rally from Ampati market and back to the venue. Later, prizes and mementoes were distributed to winners by MRMEGC Chairman Dikkanchi D Shira.
