While announcing the decision, deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters that the government closed down all institutes, be it schools or colleges from March 17 till today.
The government has received many petitions from various concerns on the need to reduce or do away with the school fees/tuition fees.
“The proposal has come from the state education department and it was decided that for three months – April, May June – all government-aided, deficit, and deficit-pattern schools should reduce 50 percent of the tuition fees,” said Tynsong.

It is considered especially for poor families directly impacted by the COVID19 pandemic.
“A notification will be issued by the state education department in this regard,” deputy chief minister Tynsong told reporters after the review meeting.
Tynsong said for private schools, no other fees, except tuition, will be charged by such private schools for three months that is, April, May, and June.
“For schools that have already collected the tuition fees for the said months, the fees can be adjusted,” he said.
Tynsong said the education department would also work out and discuss with the authorities of private schools on the possibility of reducing the tuition fees.
