The North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) on Thursday maintained that incumbent vice-chancellor, Prof S K Srivastava would comply in letter and spirit with the provisions of NEHU Acts and Statutes regarding his vice-chancellorship.
Srivastava assumed the office of Vice-Chancellor, September 24, 2015, for a period of five years which will expire on September, 23 this year.

“Prof Srivastava will comply in letter and spirit with the provisions of NEHU Acts & Statutes regarding his Vice-Chancellorship,” a statement issued by NEHU public relations officer, G Umdor said.
While clarifying certain matters raised regarding the incumbency of the office/term of the NEHU vice-chancellor, the statement said that the appointment of the vice-chancellor of NEHU is in accordance with NEHU Acts and Statutes.
The University also reproduced the amended Statutes 2 (A)(2) of the University pertaining to the Vice-Chancellor and incumbency of the office/term of the Vice-Chancellor of NEHU.

“The Vice-Chancellor shall hold office for a term of five years from the date on which he enters upon his office and shall be eligible for reappointment for no more than another term,” Umdor said in a statement.
“Provided that the incumbent Vice-Chancellor will hand-over charge to the Senior-most Professor on the expiry of his/her term if the new Vice-Chancellor has not been appointed and is not available to take charge,” the statement added.
“Provided further that the Visitor may direct that a Vice-Chancellor, whose term of office has expired, shall continue in office for such a period, not exceeding a total period of one year, as may be specified in the direction,” the statement added.
The NEHU also said that the general public was already aware that NEHU is a Central University and received its funding from the Government of India to run its academic /administrative/financial affairs, in the best interest of the students and society.
“Therefore, various directions issued from time to time by the Government of India, concerned the Ministry (Ministry of Education, UGC etc) need to be followed.
Also, the provisions of Acts and Statutes, General Financial Rules (GFR), Service Conduct Rules etc. are to be observed by all,” the statement added.
