The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) is set to develop two hydroelectric projects in Meghalaya, following approval by the state cabinet here on Thursday.

Chief Minister Mukul Sangma told reporters after the cabinet meeting that the two projects – Umduna (57 MW) and Umjaut (69 MW)–would be handed over to NEEPCO to develop them.

Earlier the Meghalaya government had allotted two projects to a private company, ETA Star Infrastructure Ltd, Mumbai, but the agreement with the firm was terminated in November after it failed to start developing the projects.

Earlier the state cabinet had decided to allot a 210-megawatt Myntdu Leshka Hydro Power Project stage-II along with other 15 projects to the state owned Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL).

Meanwhile, the state cabinet has also approved proposals of the power department for the Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Limited to get a government guarantee for availing a loan of Rs 60 crore, and convert a loan of Rs 60.25 crore into equity for the Myntdu Leshka Hydro Electricity Project.
