The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Monday demanded that the investigation into the killing of party candidate for the ensuing Assembly elections in Meghalaya, Jonathone N Sangma, be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Jonathone Sangma, along with his personal security officer and two NCP party workers, was killed at Williamnagar on Sunday night after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) went off near his convoy in East Garo Hills district followed by indiscriminate firing from militants.

He was returning to Williamnagar in a Scorpio from Sobokgre area in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills district after election campaign.

The poll-bound state is still to get over the shock over his killing.

Meanwhile, election to Williamnagar Assembly seat has been countermanded following the killing of Sangma.

NCP state working president Vijay Raj while interacting with media in Shillong on Monday said, “The investigation into the killing should be handed over to the NIA.”

He also said a complaint have been lodged with the Chief Electoral Officer F R Kharkongor demanding adequate security to all NCP candidates.

The NCP had fielded 21 candidates, including Jonathone Sangma for the February 27 poll to the 60-member Assembly in the State.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya election office has sought 10 more companies of the Central Armed Police Forces for the Garo Hills region following Sangma’s killing.
