A non-tribal small trader from Assam was killed in Shillong while seven others were injured as they were attacked by a group of miscreants on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as 29-year-old Rupchand Dewan, son of Ibrahim Dewan, a resident of Muslimpara in Borbila under Barpeta district.

According to sources, Rupchand Dewan sold tomato at Iewduh in Shillong.

This has been termed as a backlash following the death of a Khasi youth after being attacked by non-tribals at Ichamati village near Shella in East Khasi Hills district on Friday.

A clash took place between non-tribals and Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) activists at Ichamati village over differences on CAA and ILP after a KSU meeting at the village.

The youth, identified as 35-year-old Lurshai Hynniewta, son of late Serkin Nongkyndrih, a resident of Khliehshnong Sohra, was critically injured in the attack and died at Sohra CHC.

The situation in Shillong remains tense with reports of incidents of sporadic violence are pouring in despite curfew being re-imposed in the city since 12 noon on Saturday.

Fearing possible chances of serious deterioration of law and order in Shillong, curfew was imposed again in the capital city of Meghalaya.

Earlier, curfew was imposed in Shillong with effect from 10 pm on February 28 till 8 am on February 29, 2020.

In an order issued on Saturday morning, East Khasi Hills district magistrate M War Nongbri said, “Information is received that there is an apprehension of serious deterioration of law and order in Shillong city.”

As per the order, the areas under curfew include entire Police Bazar, Jail Road, Keating Road, Polo, whole of Jaiaw, Mawkhar, Mawprem, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission, Lumdiengiri, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hill, Cantonment, Boucher Road, and Mawlong Hat (excluding localities beyond Umshyrpi bridge).

The curfew will remain effective until further orders.

The Meghalaya Police have sought more Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to be deployed in the city.

Meanwhile, the East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner had discussions with several organizations and headmen in the district on Saturday and sought their cooperation to main peace and tranquility in the entire district.

Curfew has also been re-imposed at Ichamatai under Sohra civil sub-division with effect from 1 pm on Saturday.
