Meghalaya’s first lady deputy commissioner Margaret Rose Mawlong passed away on Wednesday in Shillong.

She was 82 at the time of her demise.

One of the celebrated lady bureaucrats and women leaders in Meghalaya, Mawlong breathed her last at her residence in Laitumkhrah in Shillong.

Mawlong, was the first lady DC of East Khasi Hills district from 1988 to 1991 and had held various positions in the government of Meghalaya and different social organizations.

The former IAS officer had played a major role in society as a woman leader.

An alumnus of St Mary’s School and College in Shillong, Mawlong appeared in the Assam Civil Service exams in 1967, and stood second in the merit list and first among the tribal candidates.

She was the first lady in erstwhile Assam to qualify for the state civil service exam.
