Meghalaya: Woman injured in IED blast at Shillong market, HNLC claims responsibility

Two people including a woman were injured in an IED blast at Laitumkhrah Market in Shillong on Tuesday.

Police said the blast took place at Laitumkhrah market near a tea shop situated in the parking lot around 1:30 pm on Tuesday

According to eyewitnesses, the explosion rattled doors and windows in the vicinity of Laitumkhrah.

A woman, who runs a tea shop near the blast site, sustained injuries and she was rushed to the Nazareth Hospital for treatment.

“Immediately after the incident, bomb squad, Crime Scene Unit and Dog Squad were sent to the spot for a collection of evidence.  During the preliminary investigation, it is ascertained that blast occurred due to IED,” East Khasi Hills SP Sylvester Nongtnger said in a statement.

He said that two persons sustained minor injuries and the wall of the tea shop and windows glasses of the adjacent building got damaged.

The SP said that a case has been registered at Laitumkhrah Police Station in connection with the incident.

The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), a proscribed rebel outfit in Meghalaya, has claimed responsibility for the blast.
