Two people including a woman were injured in an IED blast at Laitumkhrah Market in Shillong on Tuesday.

Police said the blast took place at Laitumkhrah market near a tea shop situated in the parking lot around 1:30 pm on Tuesday

According to eyewitnesses, the explosion rattled doors and windows in the vicinity of Laitumkhrah.

A woman, who runs a tea shop near the blast site, sustained injuries and she was rushed to the Nazareth Hospital for treatment.

โ€œImmediately after the incident, bomb squad, Crime Scene Unit and Dog Squad were sent to the spot for a collection of evidence.  During the preliminary investigation, it is ascertained that blast occurred due to IED,โ€ East Khasi Hills SP Sylvester Nongtnger said in a statement.

He said that two persons sustained minor injuries and the wall of the tea shop and windows glasses of the adjacent building got damaged.

The SP said that a case has been registered at Laitumkhrah Police Station in connection with the incident.

The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), a proscribed rebel outfit in Meghalaya, has claimed responsibility for the blast.
