Shillong: The ongoing construction to improve the safety and longevity of the Umiam Dam, a crucial structure built in 1965 in Meghalaya is expected to decrease its life by several years.

The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) began rehabilitation work in December 2023 to address concerns about the dam’s structural integrity. This project includes replacing bridge bearings, opening expansion joints, and carefully raising the bridge structure by a small amount (5-10 mm) to ensure stability.

“The process requires careful studies and exercise,” said MeECL Chairman Sanjay Goyal, emphasizing the technical nature of the work. Experts from IIT Guwahati are also providing guidance.

While the targeted completion date is June 2024, Goyal stated efforts are underway to finish by May.

Safety remains a priority, and there will be no rush to complete the project, he added.

This rehabilitation work is expected to extend the Umiam Dam’s lifespan by an additional 35-40 years.

However, traffic on the bridge has been significantly restricted during construction.
