Meghalaya: Umiam Dam repair schedule extended till July

Meghalaya Guwahati: Repairs of the Umiam Bridge, a crucial lifeline for Meghalaya are expected to be completed soon with weight some restrictions in June.

Guwahati: The Umiam Dam rehabilitation project in Meghalaya has been extended to July due to necessary modifications, reports stated.

The ongoing work on the dam bridge, which began in December, was originally expected to be completed by June.

However, after consulting with the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) for technical support, the government decided to opt for a concrete surface instead of a bituminous top layer for better long-term durability.

While this decision ensures a longer lifespan for the bridge, it also pushes back the completion date.

Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal said that there was inconvenience caused by the delays but it was important of the project.

He stated that the repairs were necessary to prevent the bridge from becoming unusable and that the rehabilitation work would extend the dam’s lifespan by 20 years.
