Meghalaya tourism minister Metbah Lyngdoh will resign on Tuesday to pave way for him to file his nominations for the election of new Assembly Speaker.

Lyngdoh, the three-time MLA of the United Democratic Party (UDP) from Mairang constituency, is the minister in-charge tourism, excise, water resources.

He was chosen as the consensus candidate of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government for the election to the Speaker’s post.

The opposition Congress has chosen its two-time MLA from Salmanpara constituency, Winnerson D. Sangma.

“I will resign as minister on Tuesday before I file my nomination papers as candidate for the Speaker’s election,” Lyngdoh told reporters.

The Meghalaya Assembly has to elect a new Speaker, following the demise of the Speaker, Donkupar Roy on July 28.

Donkupar, the veteran MLA who represented Shella constituency since 1988, held the Speaker post from March 12, 2018 till his death.
