Meghalaya is all set to celebrate World Environment day on June 5 next with an attempt to create a world record by planting 1.5 million trees.

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma has also appealed to all citizens to contribute to the campaign and be part of the mission to plant 1.5 million trees on that day. Conrad took to his official Twitter handle to appeal to the people of the State. He wrote:

‘I appeal to the citizens of to join the campaign and be part of our mission to plant 1.5 million trees this . Our journey to create a greener earth should continue beyond the celebration of World Environment Day.’

In this regard, West Garo Hills deputy commissioner, Ram Singh held a crucial meeting on Tuesday with the district officials and other concerned organizations and individuals to discuss and execute the plan of action for World Environment Day.

During the meeting, the deputy commissioner informed that the State Government has already launched the Meghalaya One Citizen One Tree (MOCOT) Campaign on World Environment Day last year.

The campaign aims at mobilizing citizens of the State and kaing them responsible and obliged towards improving the green cover in the State.

The deputy commissioner further said that the State Government aims to build on the last year’s campaign and to take it to the next level by involving larger sections of the citizens, this year both in rural and urban areas.

Further, the government department has been mobilized to take up large scale plantation works with numerous activities including planting of trees in vulnerable catchment areas where 20 localities will be mobilized to visit villages on World Environment Day and participate in the planting of trees at various locations and Avenue Plantation along identified National Highways.

Moreover, the Deputy Commissioner had also directed the concerned line departments to collaborate in identifying catchment areas, supply of planting materials, etc in order to ensure that the programme is a success.

The Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA) has been entrusted to monitor the social media campaign for online registration of citizens to participate in the programme.
