Guwahati: Tensions have reportedly risen along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills district after a man detained by the Border Security Force (BSF) and pushed back into Bangladesh was allegedly refused entry by authorities and residents on the other side.

The incident was reported from the Nandir Char sector near Mahendraganj, where the BSF detained the man on suspicion of illegally entering Indian territory from Bangladesh.

According to sources, the man was subsequently sent back across the border as part of a pushback exercise. However, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local residents allegedly declined to accept him after he crossed into Bangladeshi territory, leaving him stranded in the area beyond the border fencing.

The reported refusal has triggered tension in the border sector, with security personnel closely monitoring the situation.

Sources familiar with the matter claimed that the individual had admitted to being a Bangladeshi national. Despite this, Bangladeshi authorities and residents reportedly refused to take custody of him, creating uncertainty over his status.

Several videos purportedly linked to the incident have surfaced on social media, showing heightened activity along the border. However, the authenticity of the videos and the claims associated with them could not be independently verified.

No official statement had been issued by either the BSF or the BGB at the time of filing this report.

The incident comes amid ongoing efforts by Indian and Bangladeshi authorities to address illegal cross-border movement and streamline repatriation procedures along the international border.
