The district magistrate of East Khasi Hills district has promulgated an order under Section 144 CrPC prohibiting the sale of petrol, diesel, in loose jerricans, bottles and any other containers by all petrol pumps within the district.

The order said that the prohibitory order was necessitated in view of the information received of the ongoing agitation regarding matter relating to the demand for Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state of Meghalaya by pro-ILP groups as they have also declared to hold various agitational programmes in the near future within the State capital.

The sale of petrol and diesel in loose jerricans, bottles was prohibited in the light of the recent incidents which took place in Food Corporation of India (FCI), Khanapara, Ri Bhoi district by Assam truckers leading to the death of one Home Guard personnel and the hurling of petrol bombs in the premises of FCI Godown at Mawlai in Shillong where two carrier trucks were set ablaze.

This order comes into force with immediate effect and shall remain in force until further orders, said officials.
