The Rights and Risks Analysis Group (RRAG) has demanded a CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) inquiry into the ‘killing’ of former HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew.
“While the RRAG welcomes the resignation of the Home Minister Rymbui, given the nature of the encounter, only an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation can find out the truth,” said Suhas Chakma, Director of RRAG.

Notably, Meghalaya home minister Lahkmen Rymbui tendered his resignation amid violent protest in Shillong against the killing of former HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew.
RRAG director Suhas Chakma further stated: “The standard procedure for thorough, effective and independent investigation on police encounter deaths laid down by the Supreme Court on 23.09.2014 including the police officer(s) concerned surrendering weapons for forensic and ballistic analysis, including any other material, as required by the investigating team must be followed.”

“Meghalaya, a State with a population of 30 lakhs as per 2011 census, ranked 7th in the country on police encounter deaths during 2014-2015 to 2018-2019 is a matter of grave concern and exposes the trigger happy nature of the State police,” added Chakma.
Incidents of vandalism and arson have been reported from Meghalaya capital city Shillong since Monday as agitators protesting the ‘killing’ of former HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew took to the streets.
Personnel of the CRPF came under attack of miscreants at Mawlai area in Shillong, Meghalaya on Monday. Security personnel had to resort to use of force to disperse the agitating crowd.
The ‘attack’ came during the curfew hours in Shillong. Protestors pelted stones at the vehicle of the CRPF at Mawlai area in Shillong.

The Meghalaya government had imposed total curfew in Shillong after arson and vandalism rocked the Meghalaya’s capital city during Independence Day celebrations on Sunday.
Notably, late on Sunday night, miscreants hurled as many as two petrol bombs at the residence of Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma.
According to reports, two Molotov cocktail bottles were hurled at around 10.15 pm by vehicle-borne attackers at the premises of chief minister Sangma’s residence at Third Mile.
The first bottle was lobbed at the front side of the CM’s residence while the other one was thrown behind the backyard. However, no one was injured in the incident.
