The Opposition Congress in Meghalaya has named a retired school principal and former leader of the Garo Students Union (GSU) as candidates for the by-elections to South Tura and Ranikor Assembly constituencies.

After scrutinizing the names of ticket aspirants, the Congress decided to field Charlotte W Momin, former principal of Tura Government Public School as the candidate who will take on Chief Minister, Conrad Kongkal Sangma in the by- election to South Tura constituency.

From Ranikor constituency, the opposition party will field former GSU leader, Jackuish K. Sangma as its candidate.

Former South Tura MLA, John Leslee K. Sangma is also joining the fray as Independent candidate.

The polling to Ranikor and South Tura will be held on August 23 and counting of votes on August 27.

In Ranikor, former Assembly Speaker and five-time legislator, Martin Danggo resigned as Congress MLA and joined the ruling NPP after the Ranikor Civil Sub Division was created by the state government.

Besides Danggo, and Jackuish, the other candidates fighting the Ranikor by-election include former MLA of Mawsynram, P N Syiem as candidate of the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) and candidate of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Pius Marweiñ.
