Meghalaya Police arrested two Khasi Students Union (KSU) leaders in connection with the murder of a vegetable vendor at Iewduh in Shillong last month.

Police officials told Northeast Now that two KSU leaders were arrested for the murder of a 29-year old tomato seller, Rupchand Dewan, on February 29 at Iewdeh (Burrabazar) in Shillong.

The two arrested persons have been identified as Malajied Khongbuh, publicity secretary of KSU’s Jaiaw Circle and Landin Nongkynrih, executive member of KSU’s Mawkhar Circle.

Rupchand Dewan, son of Ibrahim Dewan, was a resident of Muslimpara in Borbila under Barpeta district.

The attack on Dewan and more than half-dozen non-tribal traders was the backlash following the death of a Khasi youth after being attacked by non-tribals at Ichamati village near Shella in East Khasi Hills district on February 28.

Police officials claimed they left no stones unturned in meticulously collecting evidences and statements from eyewitnesses.

At last, the investigating police team could identify the perpetrators of the heinous crime and arrested one person on Monday.

Police claimed the arrested person confessed to have committed the crime of killing Rupchand Dewan and had stabbed six other vendors along with three other associates.

Based on the confession, police managed to arrest the second culprit.

A massive search operation has been launched in different parts of Shillong to arrest the two others.

Police officials said the two others have been identified, and would be arrested soon.
