There was no explosion of any concrete tank that allegedly stored radioactive remnants of exploratory drilling of uranium at Nongbah-Jynrin in South West Khasi Hills.

A magistrate and a police team visited the site at Nongbah-Jynrin and they found no such explosion.

However, the team found that there was a hole in one of the concrete tanks which appeared to have been dug up intentionally.

South West Khasi Hills police termed the social media reports of the “explosion” as “fake news” and said they will ask the Cyber Crime Cell to investigate into the matter.

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) also visited the site on Tuesday and claimed cracks in at least four of the tanks.

“As of now, the KSU does not believe that the report of the explosion is a rumour,” KSU leader Forwardman Nongrem said.

Nongrem demanded that the government should take up the matter seriously and properly investigate the same.

The UCIL earlier proposed to set up an open-cast uranium mining and processing plant at Mawthabah.

Meghalaya has an estimated 9.22 million tons of uranium ore deposits.
