The Non-Gazetted Employees Association (NGEA) in Garo Hills districts has sought for a postponement of the elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) in Meghalaya.

The NGEA has informed that it will meet Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik to appeal for postponement of the GHADC elections.

The NGEA has sought for the postponement of GHADC elections until the disbursement of their pending salaries.

“Holding election to GHADC is a constitutional mandate. We are not disputing it. However, payment of salaries to the employees is also a mandate under Article 14 of the Constitution of India,” the NGEA said.

The NGEA said that given the situation, it has no other option but to boycott the elections if the Government fails to clear their pending salaries.

The GHADC elections are slated for April 9.
