Meghalaya: NEC employee arrested for ‘sexual assault’ of co-worker, sent to 14-day judicial custody

Shillong: A senior employee of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Meghalaya has been remanded to 14-day judicial custody following his arrest on charges of sexually assaulting a 21-year-old female coworker.

The accused, Shambhu Sharma, 58, who worked as a cashier at the NEC, was detained by police on Monday afternoon.

The arrest was made after the young woman filed a complaint at Laitumkhrah police station in Shillong, detailing the alleged assault.

According to the complaint, Sharma had asked the victim to accompany him to a bank in Shillong to assist with work-related tasks.

After their visit to the bank, Sharma reportedly persuaded her to stop by his residential quarters, claiming he needed to retrieve his tiffin.

Once inside, the victim alleged that Sharma forcibly assaulted her.

The incident is said to have occurred around 1:30 PM on Monday. Following the complaint, Sharma was taken into custody and underwent a medical examination before being presented before a District and Sessions Court in Meghalaya on Tuesday.

A case has been registered at the Laitumkhrah Police Station under case number 147/2024. Sharma faces charges under sections 127(2), 74, and 64(2)(b) of the BNS, including wrongful confinement, assault with intent to outrage a woman’s modesty, and rape.

The police investigation is ongoing as authorities gather further evidence.
