Guwahati: A young woman from Wapung Chnong village in East Jaiรฑtia Hills district, who had been reported missing in Ahmedabad since March 15, has been traced and is on her way home.
The case came to light after the womanโs family approached the Jaiรฑtia National Council (JNC), which subsequently filed an FIR on March 19 at the Ladrymbai Police Outpost. Acting on the complaint, the East Jaiรฑtia Hills police launched a search operation and successfully located the woman.
The JNC expressed appreciation for the prompt action by the district police, acknowledging the efforts made under the supervision of the Superintendent of Police. The organisation also thanked local MLA Santa Mary Shylla for her involvement in facilitating the process.
At the same time, the JNC linked the incident to broader concerns over youth migration from the region, attributing it to limited employment opportunities in Jaiรฑtia Hills. The group said many young people are compelled to seek work outside the state, often exposing themselves to unsafe or misleading job prospects.
JNC vice-president Nangjan Dkhar said the case underscores the need for policies that ensure sustainable employment within the state, including measures to promote job opportunities for local youth in both public and private sectors.
He also urged young people to exercise caution when pursuing employment outside Meghalaya and advised families to remain vigilant and stay informed about the whereabouts and working conditions of their children.
The JNC reiterated its earlier demand for a policy mandating job reservations for local youth in private and industrial sectors, stating that such measures could help reduce migration-related risks.
The organisation said the incident highlights the need for greater policy attention to youth employment and safety in the region.
