Shillong: Following the death of an inmate in police custody at the Khanapara Police Station, the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has initiated a suo motu investigation into the incident.

It may be mentioned that a person identified as Rudra Rabha was arrested by Ri-Bhoi police on April 24 for possessing illegal arms.

Following his arrest, he was remanded to police custody for five days on April 25 and according to police reports, Rabha cooperated with them.

He also led them to a hidden firearm in the Ranibari jungle. 

Upon returning to the Khanapara police station just three hours later on April 26, Rabha reportedly hanged himself.

The MHRC demanded a detailed report on the circumstances surrounding Rabha’s death from the Director General of Police.

This report is expected to be submitted by May 17.

It may be mentioned that there have been over 50 custodial deaths in Meghalaya since 2012.
