Mawphlang MLA Syntar Klas Sunn passed away on Friday following a brief illness.

He was 62.

Sunn, who served as the chief engineer of the Public Health Engineering (PHE), contested the 2018 Assembly elections as an independent candidate and won the polls.

He later joined the United Democratic Party (UDP), an ally of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government, led by the National People’s Party.

Sunn was the chairperson of the Assembly’s Committee on Environment.

MLA Sunn’s demise has been deeply condoled by Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma.

“I am saddened beyond words by the sudden demise of Sh. S K. Sunn, Hon’ble MLA of Mawphlang,” chief minister Sangma tweeted.

Chief minister Sangma said he admired Sunn’s “hands-on approach to public service”.

“Bah Sunn always went above & beyond his call of duty to serve the people and I admired his hands-on approach to public service. My deepest condolences to his family, loved ones & admirers,” chief minister Sangma.
