A man has allegedly killed his neighbour in North Garo Hills (NGH) district of Meghalaya on suspicion of practicing witchcraft.

The victim, identified as Daren Marak was hacked to death by his neighbor on Saturday night.

The incident took place at Dengnanggre village near Achotchongre under Bajengdoba Police Station.

According to police, one Henathson A Sangma allegedly hacked the victim to death with an axe suspecting him of practicing witchcraft.

“We have arrested the accused and further investigation is on,” NGH SP Abraham T Sangma said.

A case has been registered under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code Section (IPC).

Rumours of people practicing witchcraft had led to similar incidents in Garo Hills in the past.

Earlier in August last year, a man killed his stepbrother for allegedly practicing witchcraft.
