Meghalaya’s Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) chief executive member, Latiplang Kharkongor on Monday challenged the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to prove majority in the floor of the House.

Kharkongor’s challenge came in response to a recent statement made by UDA that its strength has gone up to 16 members in the House of 29 and Kharkongor should step down as CEM.

Interacting with media, Kharkongor suggested the UDA to refrain from making claims in ‘some tea stalls’.

“Prove your majority in the floor of the House and just don’t make claims in some tea stalls at Motphran,” he was quoted as saying in reports.

He said, the United Democratic Forum (UDF) would accept if the UDA has the number to call for a special session.

“Otherwise you cannot just say that the CEM has to step down as he has lost confidence of the House without calling a session,” he added.

Kharkongor said if the UDA want to show strength, they should do it in the floor of the House as per rules.

“Rule 22 and Rule 71 of AD Rules clearly says that the executive committee shall be collectively responsible to the district council and may be removed on the vote of no-confidence passed by the majority of the members at the meeting specially convened for the purpose,” he reiterated.

Stating that he was elected in the floor of the House as the CEM, Kharkongor said, “I got 15 votes and the UDA got nil. So how can they claim that they are in majority when I am also getting the support of 16 members.”
