James P K Sangma files nomination for Meghalaya Rajya Sabha election, backed by the ruling MDA alliance as its consensus candidate.

Guwahati: Former Meghalaya legislator and National Peopleโ€™s Party (NPP) leader James P K Sangma on June 8 formally filed his nomination for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election from the state.

He submitted his papers before Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretary Malthus S Sangma, backed by the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA).

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who also serves as NPP national president, was present during the nomination process, accompanied by cabinet ministers, MLAs and representatives of alliance partners.

Sangma has been named the consensus candidate of the MDA for the Rajya Sabha seat. Support for his candidature was extended by all major coalition partners, including the United Democratic Party (UDP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Hill State Peopleโ€™s Democratic Party (HSPDP), along with independent MLAs.

After filing his nomination, he conveyed his appreciation to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Deputy Chief Ministers Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar and all supporting legislators for entrusting him with the responsibility.

He stated that if elected to the Upper House of Parliament, he would focus on raising unresolved issues concerning Meghalaya and ensuring stronger representation of the state at the national level.

He further mentioned that his selection was the outcome of discussions among alliance partners and expressed readiness to take on any responsibility assigned by the ruling coalition.
