Suspension of internet services lifted in Khasi Hills region and curfew was further relaxed in Shillong on Wednesday. But the Meghalaya government prohibited mobile internet and data service of all mobile service providers in Garo Hills for next 24 hours from 3 pm on Wednesday. A notification in this regard was issued by additional chief secretary of home department MS Rao.
The decision was taken following a report by the Meghalaya DGP that a ‘serious law and order situation has again arisen in Garo Hills Districts of the State having potential threat to public safety.’
‘Messaging system like Whatsapp and social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are likely to be used for transmission of information like pictures, videos and text that have the potential to inflame passions and thus exacerbate the law and order situation in the entire Garo Hills,’ the notification stated.
The home department has promulgated the notification under the provision of section 5 (2) of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885.
